Children who consistently read at home with an adult perform better in school than those who do not. Many school children have parents who do not speak or read English. Through a NC Foundation for Public School Children “Parent Involvement Grant” teacher Anna Ervin at China Grove Elementary School (Rowan County) purchased a library of bilingual books written in English and Spanish so parents can read with their children. Ms. Irvin held an ESL Parent Fair where families selected ten FREE books to take home. Ms. Irvin and her fellow teachers are also distributing and exchanging books through home visits. The library is large enough where teachers will be able to distribute books through other parent meetings. Ms. Irvin says, “Parents are overjoyed to have resources in their language to share with their children!”
